I’m a casual backpacker, so I don’t feel the need to splurge on every piece of gear. These are my go-to budget-friendly items that hold up great on the trail.

Sleeping Pad & Pump Bag.I started out backpacking with a big-name sleeping pad. It was very light and packable but came with a huge downside – it was so thin and uncomfortable that I barely slept at all. I spent the whole trip sleep-deprived and grumpy. After that trip I scoured the internet for a sleeping pad that was packable, comfortable and affordable . What I found is by far my favorite piece of backpacking gear, the Paria ReCharge XL Insulated Sleeping Pad (linked for convenience). This sleeping pad is amazing! Once it’s inflated, the mattress is a few inches thick and surprisingly comfortable—I always end up sleeping so well on it. It feels more like a luxury item, but packs down fairly small. Paria also sells a really fun magic bag that helps inflate it in no time ReCharge Pump Bag.

Sleeping Bag .If you want a cozy sleeping bag that will do the job at a fraction of the cost of a big name bag try out a Hyke & Byke 15 degree sleeping bag – plus they are super packable and comfortable.

Tent. I love my Mountainsmith Tent. It has been a reliable friend for years now. One year we had rain for three nights in a row, and I was so impressed that the tent kept me dry the whole time—no leaks at all!

Camp Shoe. If you are not forging rivers, this camp shoe is light and comfortable after a day of hiking. You can find the Chaco Chillos here or go over to the Chacos website and design your own pair! If you will have some river crossings, try the Chaco Chillo Clogs here, this pair comes with an ankle strap. Not only are they a great camp shoe, they are a great every day shoe as well!

Backpacking doesn’t have to break the bank. By choosing these essential items, you can save money while also supporting awesome smaller businesses like Paria and Byke & Hyke.
